By car From the North: Tauranga, the Bay of Plenty¿s main city, is 218 kilometres from Auckland, a journey which takes about three hours by car using state highways. Using State Highways 1, 2 and 27 there is a choice of routes to Tauranga. The roads are generally excellent all the way, with good passing lanes, good signposting and small towns in which to take a break on your journey. The first route is the more scenic: Route 1 from the North ¿ through the scenic Karangahake Gorge: From Auckland, take State Highway 1 south (southern motorway), turn off on to State Highway 2 signposted to Tauranga, pass through the small towns of Ngatea and Paeroa, drive through the Karangahake Gorge, ending up at the town of Waihi. From Waihi drive south through Katikati to Tauranga. Route 2 from the North ¿ through the town of Matamata: From Auckland, take State Highway 1 south (southern motorway), turn off on to State Highway 2 signposted to Tauranga. You will now need to watch for State Highway 27 and the turn off to Matamata, at a small town called Mangatarata. Follow SH27 to Matamata, pass through this town and then follow the signposts to Tauranga. The last part of this route will take you through the Kaimai-Mamaku forest park, affording great views. All roads are main highways. From the South: Coming from the south, Rotorua is a 40 minute trip away on State Highway 2. From Gisborne, through the Waioeka Gorge, take State Highway 2 towards Opotiki, keep following State Highway 2 signposted to Tauranga. This journey takes around three hours. By Bus or Shuttle Service Professional coach companies operate throughout the north island, delivering an efficient bus service between main centres. Tauranga, the Bay of Plenty¿s main city, is linked to numerous other towns by a comprehensive network of bus transport.
